The Haunting Of The Sade Estate

By T-Rex

Years ago in the New England state of Massachusetts, there was a settlement. It was the puritan age of witch hunts, trials, and executions. The settlement was more like the headquarters of the tribunal for trying and executing witches in the area. Everything in the settlement related to the business of prosecuting witches. Right at the edge of the settlement were the gallows and a water tank. A contingency of witch hunters found a witch coven in a town not to far from the settlement. They captured the leader and the fellow so called witches and brought them back to be tried and convicted. As usual, the town people's accusations were based on superstitions, fears, and myths more then the actual facts. The coven leaders name was Tamara Sade. Tamara Sade witnessed her friends being convicted and put to death one by one. Finally, It was her turn. Tamara was led out to the execution site. Something new was there. Instead of preparing her to be hung or drowned, they had decided her crime was worthy of being burned at the stake. She was bound to a pole in sadistic manner using wire. They stripped her, whipped her and oiled her so her agony would be prolonged while she burned. They made sure she suffered the most horrendous death possible.

Later, the state had found out that all the accusations, made against the witches were proved false. The officials of the state proclaimed no more witch hunting. The settlement was dismantled and the occupants were banished from the region. To compensate for the families' losses the state granted them free land rights in the area. Tamara's family received a large portion of land north of the settlement. Much later, a descendent of the Sade family, Samuel T Sade, built a large colonial house north of the settlement. The settlement, by that time, had become an incorporated community. Samuel Sade and several generations after him lived in the house very secluded from the citizenship in the nearby community. During that time, the generations that lived in the grand house never experienced anything out of the ordinary. Then the last heir of the Sade family decided to sell the estate.

The heir sold it to a English girl named Audrey. Audrey was in her twenties. She had dark hair, pretty figure and smile. She loved old houses. The town had become a city and she found a job that easily supported her. She liked the country and enjoyed the quiet life. Audrey had some acquaintances. Mainly she liked just being out doors and she loved the quiet old house, the decor, and all. She loved to read and especially loved the fireplace in the reading room. Audrey would spend her hours before bed reading by the fire's glow in the winter time. Audrey had found some writings in diaries of the Sade family along with recordings in the witch hunter journals. She was especially interested in the accounts of the Tamara Sade witch trial. Audrey was deeply moved by the things she read. Some times she would stop and stare at the fire's glow. When she had company she always entertained them in the room with the fireplace. Some of her guests felt she would get distracted from the fire when they tried to converse with her.

By early spring time, Audrey had well established herself both in the community and on her estate. Her social encounters of one kind or another left an empty and cold feeling inside her. One night, as she was alone with a book and a fire going, she thought she saw a face in the flames. She also thought she felt a presence in the room. It was like the fire was trying to talk to her. There was a gleam to the flickering. There was a breathy sound mixed in with the crackle. The reading ritual after dinner became harder to accomplish as the days wore on. Audrey started turning down dates and invitations. It seemed all she wanted to do after work was to stare at that fire. She did not even bother to read anymore. She honestly believed, at that point, she had something in common with the fire. She felt the fire was talking to her. Telling her what she should do. She even sat and asked questions to it and having conversations with it.

By the beginning of summer, Audrey's evening and night time ritual was an obsession. She was now masturbating in front of the fire. She would tell the fire how much she loved it. The people wondered why there was smoke coming from her chimney as the summer was not a time for fire in the fire place. Audrey started losing sleep, and became an introvert. She turned down invitations to party and to date. People in her life were becoming more worried about the way she was acting. She finally quit showing for work and was fired. Audrey turned her friends and co workers away at the door. All she wanted for companionship, was the life in the fire in the fire place. She would finger herself as the sweat rolled down her soft skin every night. She spent most of the day chopping wood and cleaning out the fireplace for the fire that night.

Then finally the fateful day arrived. Audrey had spent most of the day chopping and hauling wood. She had cleaned out the fire place and was ready to pile for that nights fire, when she felt like she needed to light a match. As she looked at the flame, she saw a girls face that said. "Come with me, come with me; all my friends went a different way; I am alone." The voice was so sexy and soft. Audrey knew that this was the same voice that had seduced her that made her feel warm inside as well as out and that truly loved her. Now the fire entity has invited Audrey to spend an eternity with it. Audrey would never feel cold or lonely again. Audrey loaded the wood in the fireplace as usual but she did not light it. In stead, she went up stairs, took a bath, made up her face, and put on her favorite dress.

Audrey waited until that night. She dressed herself up like she was going on a date with a prince. Audrey took away the fire screen and lit the fire. She watched religiously as the fire grew. Audrey's eyes sparkled from the flickering flames. Then she saw a hand and heard the soft voice in midst of the flames. She saw a finger of fire waving back to the flames. "Come to me, I am so cold, I need your warmth and love. Please may I have your clothing to warm me? Show me you care, show me you love me!" Audrey lost all apprehension at that moment. Audrey stood up ,undressed herself and threw each garment onto the flaming pile. Audrey watched in total awe as she saw a smiling face in the midst of her burning dress. "Come closer to me, I am here." Purred the flame in a sultry sexy way. Audrey stepped up on the ledge. She was only a foot away from the burning embers. She could feel the heat on her legs starting to sting. "Oh!" Audrey cried out. "It is to hot here." Audrey stepped back off the ledge. The flame flashes up in a ball and pleads. "Don't go! I need you! You need me! You have nothing in your existence. Yes it will burn and you feel great pain; but your reward will be the one who will love you for all eternity."

Audrey stood looking and listening to the seductive flames. Then she closed her lovely eyes and took two steps up on the ledge. Two large flames grabbed hold of Audrey's ankles as if they were hands. Audrey screamed and tried to back up but she could not move. Her skin was sizzling. Audrey's flesh on her feet and ankles were being seared by the heat. Audrey tried to hold herself up by hanging onto the top mantel of the fire place. Her legs were turning red, gave way, and soon she crumpled into the flames.

Audrey screamed and cried as the flames caressed her flesh. They left in their wake bistered and charred skin. As her body struggled to survive, embers scattered themselves on to the carpet. The carpet soon caught fire. Audrey no longer screamed and struggled. Her body was totally engulfed in flames. Audrey's body looked just like another log on the fire. Soon the room was raging in fire. The screams started again but not with one screaming in agony; instead it was two girls screaming in ecstasy.

The whole house was engulfed when the fire engines arrived. The city fire department arrived way to late to save the house or its' contents. The only thing they could do was to keep it from spreading. They were frustrated because they kept hearing women's voices sounding like they were on fire in a different way. There was no way the fire fighters would be able to rescue anybody in that burning inferno. Yet, when they sifted through the ruins, no traces of human bodies were ever found. The haunting of the Sade estate was over. The entity was no longer alone. My dear reader: you might look and listen long and hard at the fire in your fireplace as you may have a companion calling for you.

The End
