'Twas in a room so very dark,
Upon a wall forever stark,
Her picture hanged alone and still;
Quiet in the evening's chill.
My candle flickered dancing shadows,
Across the wall and frosted windows,
While I stared in raptured thought-
This woman's love I'd sought -
I heard her voice speak so cold, so clear,
"There's no love for you, my dear."
'Twas in that room so very dark
Beside a wall forever stark
I sighed and shrugged and went to bed,
Sleeping by her body dead.
