"A Rebel's Heart"
By Joseph

I just don't know.

I don't know why she didn't fall with the roar of the rifles. Perhaps it was her youth, perhaps the fiery passion that burns in a rebel's heart, but her heart beat on.

Her heart beat on...; even as her tattered blouse turned to red and her life's blood spilled from the corner of her mouth turning her pale lips a ruby red.

Her heart beat on...; with orbs of emerald green fixed, staring through the smoke rising from the barrels of the rifles into the eyes of her executioners as she slowly dropped to her knees.

Her heart beat on...; as the Captain of the Guard tucked the cold muzzle his revolver tight beneath the gentle swell of her left breast to administer the coup de grace.

Her heart beat on...; and time seemed to slow down..., and then stand still in the deathly quiet of the Courtyard as the Priest from the Monastery made the sign of the cross.

Her heart...; her heart...; beat...; beat...on;

As the shot rang out, the echo's sharp report climbed the blood splattered wall and so did the girl. Her slender body going stiff with a startled gasp and arching up like a bow, every muscle drawn taunt before crumpling like a rag doll into the growing pool of crimson in front of the pockmarked wall.

Kneeling by her side, the Doctor turned back her blood soaked blouse, pressed his stethoscope to the gentle slope her left breast, and noted the time.

I don't know why she didn't fall with the roar of the rifles. Perhaps it was her youth, perhaps the fiery passion that burns in a rebel's heart.

I just don't know.

The End (Or maybe the beginning of another Story).
